Chapter 14: Still Alive

R yker still didn’t have the lard he’d hoped to obtain from the residents of Noblepine, but he had something even better: a nut-based oil that Garth referred to as whipplenut butter. That was a misnomer. It wasn't butter—not really, anyway. It straddled the line between a spread and an oil. The only issue was that it had a bit of an unpleasant aroma.

Thankfully, he also managed to procure some spices and other items for the kitchen. One of the items was a minty extract in green powder form. When added to the whipplenut butter, it smoothed out the consistency while improving the smell.

For now, he had a large mason jar full of his little mixture. He ran a few tests on himself to understand how this concoction would feel on bare skin, to start. He concluded that it wasn’t really as pleasant as a pure massage oil, but it was certainly preferable to having nothing of the sort at all.

Even better, it wiped off easily and seemed to encourage exfoliation in the pores, probably due more to the mint infusion than anything else. “Not bad for a first attempt,” he muttered to himself as he stood inside his room.

Well, their room. That was by far the most interesting development of all, even more interesting than three customers showing up at once. That was more lucky than anything, because if they’d arrived even a day sooner, they wouldn’t have been ready.

But now he was sharing a small room with only one bed with two of the most beautiful women he’d ever known in his life. That was awesome. However, it was also bound to be full of surprises and drama, which he wasn’t looking forward to all that much.

Ryker exited his room with the jar of improvised massage cream and grabbed the massage table he’d reclaimed from the goblin man. He walked up to the room where the elf and dwarf would be staying and knocked his knuckles against the aged wood, then waiting for their reply.

“Right,” a thick voice said inside. “It should be unlocked, then. Come in, will ye?”

Ryker opened the door. His heart started up like an engine at the prospect of finally practicing his craft professionally again. It didn’t help his heart rate much that the elven woman had stripped out of her armor and was wearing only a pair of black underwear and a simple black brassiere with rips in the fabric in a few key places. Like Thraki, her musculature was impressive, but her physique was built less for strength and more for finesse. The sword she had with her was a thin rapier, which Ryker recognized from Ivan’s memories and experience. She also had a bow and a quiver of arrows lying out on the table.

“Sorry ‘bout my friend,” the red-bearded dwarf groaned, seated on the bed. “We’ve been on the road for ages and she’s tossed all sense of modesty into the shithole.”

Ryker smiled politely and nodded, managing not to stare.
